Turn every pallet so the 48 in side runs across — two across is 96 in, inside a 98.5 in body — and each row is only 40 in deep, so fifteen rows fit and the count is 30. Forklift access at the nose and the door, and whether the cargo overhangs the 40 in side, decide which of the two you actually get.

Nominal figures. Van interiors vary by manufacturer and by liner; reefer interiors by the unit and the floor. Payload depends on the tractor, the axle spread and the state — 80,000 lb gross is the usual federal ceiling. Pallet counts assume no overhang.

What changes the answer
Four reasons a 53 ft carries fewer pallets, or more, than the number on the spec sheet.
- Loading pattern
- Straight rows waste the remainder at one end. Pinwheeling — alternating orientation around the perimeter — regularly fits an extra pallet or two into the same floor, which is why two people can measure the same trailer and disagree by 10%.
- Axle limits, not just total weight
- A trailer under its gross limit can still be illegal if the load sits too far forward or back. Weight has to distribute across the axles, which is a placement problem rather than a total — and it is the constraint that most often forces a reload at the weighbridge.
- Overhang
- Cargo that extends past the pallet edge changes the footprint the trailer sees. A few centimetres per pallet is what turns 33 into 30, and it is the single most common reason a published count does not survive contact with real cargo.
- What may sit on what
- Double-stacking doubles a count only if the lower tier can carry the upper one and the total clears the roof. Fragile, non-tiltable and crush-limited items break that arithmetic, and they are the norm rather than the exception.

Typically 43,000–45,000 lb (about 20 tonnes) of cargo under the 80,000 lb federal gross limit, depending on the tractor and trailer weights. Per-axle limits and the bridge formula can cut that further if the load is concentrated.
Can I double-stack pallets in a 53 ft?
With 110 in of height, two tiers fit when each loaded pallet is under about 54 in and the lower tier can carry the upper one. Fragile, crushable or top-heavy cargo breaks that; the planner lets you mark what may not have anything on top.
